The story behind the brand

Moleskine is a term from bookbinding. It refers to a sturdy cotton fabric from which book covers are made and also relates to notebooks in classic style. This double meaning is due to the British writer and globetrotter Charles Bruce Chatwin, who called his notebooks with Moleskine covers in a French manner "carnets moleskines" (carnet means booklet in French). The Italian label was founded in 1997 and had protected the term as a brand name. Since then, moleskine stands for thumb-thick notebooks that are held together with an elastic band and have a folding pocket in the back cover. This design is based on the descriptions of the notebooks used by Bruce Chatwin on his travels and on typical notebooks of the intellectual and artistic elite of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Milan-based company offers bags and accessories in its range since 2011. Usually, all Moleskine backpacks and bags are water-repellent, making them suitable both for everyday use and for travel.
